Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Memorial Dedication Today

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Memorial Dedication Today

Washington D.C. Mall

Today, in Washington D.C. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Memorial will be officially dedicated and weather permitting, President Obama is scheduled to give the official commencement speech.

I have said it many times before: I believe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is the greates hero in Rolex history. This is a bold declarative statement considering the fact Dr. King is in amazing company which includes men like Chuck Yeager and Sir Edmund Hillary. I have written extensively on Dr. Martin Luther King on Jake's Rolex World and I highly recommend you explore his amazing history.

Dr. Martin Luther King wore a yellow gold Rolex Datejust as pictured above and below. The photo of Dr. King praying (above), was taken just weeks before his death. When Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee he was wearing his beloved Rolex Datejust.

It is deeply profound to consider the man who successfully set America free and caused it to live up to its creed, did so wearing a Rolex Datejust!!! Dr. King lived and died for America. I believe hundreds of years from now, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will be regarded as the greatest American that ever lived!!!

Dr. King gave his life so all American's may enjoy many of the civil rights we enjoy today. Since today is such a special day, I decided to publish these two fascinating telegrams Dr. Martin Luther King sent to President Kennedy in 1961 and 1963. To learn much, much more about Dr. King's amazing legacy you can read the extensive story I wrote about his incredible journey.

Ben's Single Red Submariner
[Reference 1680]

I didn't realize it at first, but this singled red Submariner is missing the cyclops lens? We can see the side profile of the watch, but my best guess is that Ben put a SEA-DWELLER crystal on it?

The Greatest Artist That Ever Lived Pablo Picasso Stainless Steel Rolex GMT Master

"A day without laughter is a wasted day." –Pablo Picasso

...Rolex Ultra-Super Coolness...

The Most Prolific Modern Artist In History

Pablo Picasso

Stainless Steel Rolex GMT Master
[Reference 1675]

Pablo Picasso is pictured below wearing an American Indian headdress, while sporting his stainless steel Rolex GMT Master–in his later years in the 1960s. The supreme irony behind Pablo Picasso wearing a Rolex GMT Master is that in the 1960s his art had been completely whacked-out and anti-symetrical for many, many decades, yet he wore a Rolex which was completely symmetrical and perfectly balanced.

Pablo Picasso
Cowboy & Indian

Pablo Picasso was pals with Gary Cooper who gave him the 6 Shooter pistol that Picasso is playing with in the photo below. It is fascinating when you consider Picasso was a Spaniard, yet he looked so cool posing as an American Cowboy and Indian.

Pablo Picasso is pictured below in 1960 with Gary Cooper who played a cowboy in many, many American Western movies. Gary Cooper's most famous cowboy role was probably in High Noon.

Gary Cooper also gave Pablo Picasso the American Indian Headdress/ War Bonnet pictured below, and we see Picasso posing for this picture. It's remarkable how much Picasso looks like an American Indian!?!

The Ever Elusive Charlton Heston Rolex Advertisement...

...Rolex Coolness...

Charlton Heston

There is a really fascinating story behind this ad that just came in. I originally learned about this Charlton Heston Rolex advertisement from T. Walker Lloyd who was a world renowned DEEP-SEA diver who ended up becoming a Rolex executive for 25 years.

In one of my podcast interviews with T. Walker, he told the story behind this Rolex ad, and I was surprised that I was not familiar with it and had never come across it. You can learn more about T. Walker Lloyd and check out the podcasts by clicking here.

I think that coming across this ever elusive vintage Rolex ad makes me realize just how much other great Rolex history out there is yet undiscovered and I look forward to bringing you more of it in the future.

The Greatest Basketball Player In History
A Brilliant Life With Rolex Keeping His Time

Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest basketball player in history, and perhaps the greatest athlete in history, as well. Michael Jordan is pictured below in a recent photograph, sporting his Rolex MasterPiece watch. Men's Rolex MasterPiece watches are rare, and they are basically Rolex Day-Dates with a special bracelet. Rolex MasterPiece watches have been particularly popular with NBA players.

The photos (below) of Michael Jordan playing golf were taken in the eighties and he is wearing his two-tone Rolex Datejust. Today Michael Jordan also wears a Platinum Rolex Day-Date which you can see in the photos below the gold shots.

...Rolex Studio Shot Of The Day... Roberto's Single Red Explorer

...Rolex Studio Shot Of The Day...

Roberto's Single Red Explorer

What!?!?!?! A Single RED Rolex Explorer!?!?!? Of course we have heard of and seen Single Red Rolex Submariners and SEA-DWELLERS, but never a Single Red Rolex Explorer, not until today at least. Roberto took this photo of his vintage Rolex Explorer with a gilt dial and hands, complete with a red depth designation located directly under the EXPLORER designation.

What exactly is the definition of a "gilt" dial and hands? Rolex used to make their dials in such a way that the second track, 5 minute markers (indices) and all the writing on the face of the dial were made from a process that basically embedded gold into the dial, and they also made their hands the same way.

Over time, due primarily to oxidation, the gold dial and hands can develop a beautiful patina, like on the watch below. Also, if you notice on the watch below, the lump material has also oxidized and turned to a bronze color that magnificently matches the gold "gilt."

Serious vintage collectors today are always and ideally looking for vintage Rolex watches that have developed an unusual patina. This is due to the fact, that a vintage watch with a beautiful patina can often times look unique and offer up its own personality, whereas all new watches look identical. This explains why somebody would find an old Rolex in a drawer, that looks like it is old and yellowed, and perhaps not even running, and they assume it is an old piece of junk, when in reality, if it has a non-cosmetic overhaul, it can end up being worth a fortune.

Jakob, from Sweden, is a fan of Top Gear, Rolex watches, and of course Jake's Rolex World. He wrote in to share a photo of James May from the latest episode of Top Gear (17x06) sporting a stainless steel Rolex Milgauss. That means that so far at least two out of the three hosts of Top Gear wear Rolex. Richard Hammond sports a Submariner.

If you are not familiar with James May, you can check him out in this video driving the crazy, whicked, fast Bugatti Veyron. The Bugatti Veyron is the fastest car money can buy today. Take this full-screen and crank the volume way up!!!!!!
